Why Excellence Is So Rare and 8 Quotes to Motivate Your Socks Off

Why Excellence Is So Rare and 8 Quotes to Motivate Your Socks Off

A man walks into your office and offers you a Steinway for your church’s stage. No strings attached. What do you do…accept one of the finest instruments in the world or turn it down in favor of keeping that suddenly very ordinary piano/keyboard currently residing on your stage? It’s a no-brainier, right?! And yet there are tons of people who take a pass on excellence every day. Hence, it’s as rare as a Steinway. The thing about achieving and maintaining excellence in a worship ministry, a church, or really any organization is: it takes constant vigilance and a healthy dose of elbow grease. When I came to LifeQuest Church 6+ years ago, one of the first things I noticed was: Excellence matters to our church’s leadership core! We sought excellent facilities, so we remodeled. We wanted excellent ministries, so we hired staff and trained volunteers and required background checks and increased expectations across the board.  But, even so, it has proven a constant battle and–like so many values in...

Are We Responsible for Raising Up Skilled Musicians?

Are We Responsible for Raising Up Skilled Musicians?

Have you given up…thrown in the towel…raised the white flag…resigned yourself to what you have? The quest for excellence in worship ministry is a tiresome one. Or expensive :) for those who are able and choose to hire professionals. (Personally, I find it surprising that our largest churches don’t have superb musicians in their congregations just waiting to get on stage and volunteer the gifts and abilities God gave them. But this blog post is not really about that so I digress.) Worship Leader Magazine recently published an extended version of my “Are You Allowing Excellence to Knockout Excellence?” post in their eNewsletter. I was blown away by the amount of conversation it generated on their site and on Facebook.  I was expecting the blowback from leaders who emphasize spiritual qualifications to the near-complete exclusion of skill. But what blew me away was the number of worship leaders who argued passionately about our responsibility to raise up skilled musicians from within our churches. I was humbled and challenged by...

Why You Can’t Afford to Neglect Your Presentation Anymore, Part 2

Why You Can’t Afford to Neglect Your Presentation Anymore, Part 2

Presentation matters. Why is it you can spot a wedding party from a mile away? Because they’re decked out in the finest fashion. People pay for it, people are impressed by it, people are drawn to it. I’ve seen a lot of worship ministries that strive for excellence in their musical presentation but the lyric presentation is AWFUL! Words unreadable, images blurry with copyright info all over it, off-centered, gawdy video loops, ugly fonts…all this communicates, “we don’t care if you sing along or not, we’re just here for us.” If you truly value and prioritize the church’s song, prove it! How to present excellence is the million-dollar question and I’ve broken this into 2 posts:  The first discussed software choices. Now let’s talk tips and tricks for creating an excellent presentation.   Background First, be really picky about your background. Plain black would be better than 90% of the worship background video loops that are being peddled to you. In a video, you’re looking for loops that aren’t herky-jerky, that are...

Why You Can’t Afford to Neglect Your Presentation Anymore, Part 1

Why You Can’t Afford to Neglect Your Presentation Anymore, Part 1

Presentation matters. Sometimes all that separates a cheap meal from an expensive, gourmet meal is it’s presentation. People pay for it, people are wowed by it, people are drawn to it. Invest in an excellent presentation that will draw people to participate. If you use hymnals, provide nice ones. And if you use screen projection, project excellence. How? That’s the million-dollar question and I’m going to break this into 2 posts:  This one discusses software choices. The next will give tips for creating an excellent presentation. When it comes to presentation software, you have 5 viable options. Which you choose does matter. Some make it...
