Why Excellence Is So Rare and 8 Quotes to Motivate Your Socks Off
A man walks into your office and offers you a Steinway for your church’s stage. No strings attached. What do you do…accept one of the finest instruments in the world or turn it down in favor of keeping that suddenly very ordinary piano/keyboard currently residing on your stage? It’s a no-brainier, right?! And yet there are tons of people who take a pass on excellence every day. Hence, it’s as rare as a Steinway.
The thing about achieving and maintaining excellence in a worship ministry, a church, or really any organization is: it takes constant vigilance and a healthy dose of elbow grease. When I came to LifeQuest Church 6+ years ago, one of the first things I noticed was: Excellence matters to our church’s leadership core! We sought excellent facilities, so we remodeled. We wanted excellent ministries, so we hired staff and trained volunteers and required background checks and increased expectations across the board. But, even so, it has proven a constant battle and–like so many values in an organization–excellence tends to drift. This is true in your context, too, isn’t it? Our task is to remain vigilant and committed because maintaining a high level of excellence is not only a monumental undertaking, it’s also worth it!
From time to time, we need to be reminded of that. So here are eight outstanding quotes about excellence. I hope they recharge and refocus your energies (aka, motivate your socks off) on the excellence factor in your world:
“We value excellence because it honors God and draws people.” -LifeQuest Church Value Statement
“Nothing is changed by a mediocre performance.” – John Maxwell
“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.” -Martin Luther King Jr
“The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.” -John Maxwell
“People judge churches the same way they judge restaurants.” -Tom McCaslin
“Churches only get one chance to make a lasting impression.” -Alan Nelson
“What would happen to our leadership? What would happen to our preaching? What would happen to our music? What would happen to our administrative functions if everybody in the church established their own level of quality control based on the excellence of Jesus Christ and remained dogged in their determination to honor him with their best every time.” – Bill Hybels
“The real tragedy from my perspective was that this [dirty/cluttered] adult ministry environment taught a series of lessons the Sunday school department wasn’t aware of.
Lesson #1:We aren’t expecting guests.
Lesson #2: What we are doing here is not all that important.
Lesson #3:We expect somebody to clean up after us.
Lesson #4: We don’t take pride in our church.” – Andy Stanley
